Mormon, Desert or Brigham Tea (Ephedra)

Ephedra viridis, (Mormon, Desert or Brigham tea) (Ephedra torreyana) of the genus Ephedra named by Linnaeus 1753. It is the only genus in the Ephedraceae family and will cross pollinate if located in the same area of its cousins. Brigham or Mormon tea hasn't any ephedrine alkaloids. The other quality of ephedra's will depends on the variety of its species. Don't get the ephedra's mixed up. There's 32 known species of ephedra (ephedra sinica has the strongest concentration of ephedria. However, this page concern is on the other milder acceptable form. The ephedra's are Chineses oldest medicine ,5000 years old. It has long been used for minor cold, relaxes the air passages in the lungs and helps asthma, coughs, promotes perspiration, urination so it helps relieve edema and kidney problems.
Most, have also been used for sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. Traditional uses for bronchial, hives body aches, low blood pressure, rheumatism, narcolepsy, shortness of breath, fever without sweat. It stimulates the central nervous system, elevates blood pressure and increases the heart rate. The plant also has antiviral effects. The stems are an antidote, diaphoretic, diuretic, pectoral, vasoconstrictor and vasodilator. It is useful in treatment of emphysema, whooping cough and many other chest conditions affecting children and of course adults.
It has thermogenic fat burning properties while sparing the lean muscle tissues. Widely sought after for diet medications.(Pharmacies varieties, I actually bought a form from the HFS...the gall! Drug industry is so corrupt! And...they think we public can't smell their stink!)

The FDA banned alkaloid containing natural ephedra but not the others use for teas such as Mormon tea, Oriental medicines, or product by the pharmaceutical industries. Remember Mormon tea has no banned alkaloids. Many HFS and sales on the Internet try to fool you or are just ignorant in herbology. NOTE: THEY DID NOT BAN IT FOR THEIR USES.
Their self interest, laws are contradictory by allowing drug companies to use this herb exclusively for their over the counter drug products. Yet, over the counter herbs buying are banned to the public. They are trying now to control this market too. FDA makes laws for public banned alkaloid is only for their and wall street pockets. This is outrageous controlled by the government funded FDA. Give me a break!
If you use herbs get a good herbalist dictionary. I've found many errors when looking for research on the Internet in some areas. I've used this herb for depression, and don't like it. It can aggravate existing depression that was caused by too much dopamine. If you can hear your own thoughts (thinking them singled+slowly) stop this herb.
Or, if your mind races, its clues, your body giving signals to cut back and re adjust dosage, or don't take at all. Only introduce Ephedra plants, one herb at a time, with no drugs that will give you a false signal.
With some herbs you cannot follow the directions on the bottle, because it really depend on the strength of this “lot.” fillers, non-or-organic etc.) Children can use this herb for the same reasons adult use it. It certainly better than drugs (chemicals.) However, age, weight, herb dilutions, which solvents has to be considered to be used more effectively for children s use. Make use of teas and tinctures and look up its “solvent” used to break that herb down most effectively. Need that herbalist dictionary yet? The basic solvent may be water, oil, alcohol, or maybe vinegar, and may depend on how much and how long you want to store it. It's really like cooking from here.. Then you can add honey to sweeten it, juice, or other sugars i.e. I'm just trying to get you to know that making herbals tinctures,or medical teas at home can save you a lot of money if you buy your basic bulk herbals that fit your basic need to your personal diseases.
They have lots in UTAH, It grows in the deserts of West of North America.
(*) Depending on he seriousness of asthma attack may be better to use the Ma Huang (see posts) Folks have gone off oxygen with this species.
*Depressions: try Kava and Green tea instead of ephedra as it is great for most "depressions.' Take when low, you'll be surprised.

**A bedside purification system that cleans the air while asthma sufferers sleep significantly reduces their symptoms, a study has found.
One air-filter, Protexo, removes dust particles, pet hairs and powders that can cause inflammation of the lungs and trigger symptoms such as wheezing and tight chests
