I ran out of peanut butter I use Adams non-stir no sugar. I generally keep two or three jars on hand because I have to have a peanut butter sandwich every day. I use the Ylow-carb bread that has plenty of seeds and grains in it it makes a nice meal or snack.
Since the coronavirus has hit the stores everybody stocking up on items that are good because they’re not there when you need them like I found. So I resort to the health food stores because there’s no non-stir no sugar peanut butter in the stores they’re always loaded with sugars. All bread have sugar in it so you can be eating 9 g of sugar per sandwich every single meal that you eat this peanut butter. For a diabetic that’s too much we can’t eat it.
I’m not picking on just Walmart of course they all do it the manufactures decide we like sugar says who?
How much putting honey in it? Today you can’t find what you want in the stores so do stock up if you’re diabetic.
Then I went to the health food stores. The same problem but they want more for the same problem with their brand of course.
If you count the number- calories, sugar that would be about 9 g or more per sandwich. That’s too high of sugar for anyone. It’s no wonder the kids are hyper? My dataS off my carb breads And that’s still too much ...How about your higher carb breads ... Eat a candy bar!

Eating Meat is notThe best diabetic food
Is not diabetic food.
I’ve gotten along with this and I’ve tried it and I’ve heard it because I’ve been a diabetic for quite a number of years I started out as hypoglycemia and now I’m hyper. Some of them don’t know the difference between the two the two people that I used to follow on these following posts I no longer support. You’re in a hobbyhorse one has a wife who obviously is not a diabetic and he is high pole glycemia not hyper. In the other butter Bob doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Too much meat In his diet for me I’m going another direction back towards vegetarianism but let me use one of their own words their own statements that catch them up in that I caught.
Let’s try and experiment like he gave us in this video I am providing he says he tried spaghetti O‘s and it brought his blood sugars too low. Isn’t that what we want?
His wife on the show clearly shows she’s not a diabetic at all. I like his recipes so I will continue to post the ones I like and see what he has to say.
But no more of this all meat diet that he has and butter Bob.
Let’s do the experiment in the video where diabetics I presume you are or you would be reading this and let’s get some SpaghettiOs and just vegetables that day and see if our blood sugar doesn’t go down.
I was doing periodically vegetarian days and then I switched to a pro team because that’s what they said I needed to do and I all I think we all need to not have all meet days anyway it clogs up the system everything in the body needs to turn to glucose and we need sugar and oil for the brain. I have this published in tough times today that you can read.
I’m taking my blood sugar before I get the can of SpaghettiOs then three hours after taking it again and seeing if my blood sugar didn’t go down. Will you do the experiment to and report back.
Listen to what he says he went into hypoglycemic.
Judge for yourself try it here’s the video.
To catch you up-to-date him and his wife are pastors in Africa and he does this on the side. Very nice and talented man. I’m attacking the principal remember I am not attacking him at all I really like him.

Diabetic mug cake, no calories
Diabetic mug cake, no
I go to this guy if I want a diabetic dessert he figures out the carbs any deducts the fiber from the carbs so do I. This did not raise his blood sugar I trust him because he takes a meter reading before and after eating anything. This cake is good for anyone no matter who you are your blood sugar raises and lowers🥚🌮☕️🎂
We all crave a dessert and we should have one I’ve got lots of recipes for no sugar desserts. This one I added to my recipe collections. The unusual thing is you’ll need sour cream bakers no sugar chocolate and Bakers Chocolate. He’ll tell you the rest.

You might want to check this one out Coke versus Diet Coke. Remember both of them make you to acid so I disagree with him and Stevia is a sensitive it has a much sugar in it all so many people don’t know that I don’t do well on Stevia you might check that out on YouTube it’s where I got my information you can find anything there 😝

Keeping weight off by controlling Blood śugars
I keep weight off by controlling the high blood sugars which basically everyone has to do. Once in a while I find a couple of new products on the market today and there’s many coming out that help out with this process. I’ve mentioned before I’ve lost three dress sizes but the key is keeping it off.
I found one recently that I sent to my family and I’ll share with you today. This one replaces Bryce a diabetic problem whether it’s brown rice or white too many carbs that we can’t I just if you’re taking insulin you can read it on your meters after you eat rice.
When I have a bad meal I know it by the next reading of my meter.

This product does not taste like cauliflowerAs you might 💭
It’s texture is firm and doesn’t smell like The vegetable. You can use it in anyway you would use rice even with butter and pepper or salt. I always read every week because I like it so much.

Burn Fat FAST With Intermittent Fasting
How to Support Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is healthy for most people. However, if you suffer from diabetes, hypoglycemia, chronic adrenal stress, or cortisol dysregulation, you must take specific precautions and work with your physician and dietitian to ensure healthy balance of nutrition and fasting. Pregnant and nursing mothers should not fast as their babies need the nutrition to grow and develop appropriately.
Adding this type of fasting to your health regimen may be challenging but the rewards are significant.
Begin by using a fasting schedule you think you can maintain. Drink plenty of water and/or tea to help feel full and satisfied during the day. If your taking diabetic med. (I skip them on my fasting days) No food no problem in insulin's and blood sugars. You can do intermittent fasting (semi fasting) which will improves your immune system and mitochondrial function, reduces your inflammatory process and the amount of free radicals in your body. It is also dramatically helps to slow down the aging process, especially if you eat your macronutrients in the correct ratios In other words, going without food now and then is not going to kill you — on the contrary, it may be one of the keys to living a longer and healthier life. http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2016/03/25/health-benefits-fasting.aspx

Think Again About Stevia
I really have used, a lot of stevia, in all forms. I stopped when I noticed my major lung problem stopped when I didn't have my daily diet drink that Coke came out with. So then I began to look up the side effect. I noticed I needed more calcium, had heart problems and made my asthma worse with attacks at night. I stopper and I'm getting so much better. If you have some of the cautions in this post stop till symptoms are gone. Take more and see if it returns. I won't do that I had sever renal failure.
Leaves of the stevia plant used to make a sugar substitute.
Leaves of the stevia plant used to make a sugar substitute.
The stevia plant is part of the Asteraceae family, related to the daisy and ragweed. Several stevia species called "candyleaf" are native to New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.
Today, stevia is part of the sugar substitute market.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates Americans added more sugar to their diet every year since the 1970s until 2000. When Americans dropped the added sugar, they turned to sugar like extracts. The sugar substitute market was estimated to be worth $10.5 billion in 2012, according an analysis by Markets and Markets research firm.
Does stevia work?
Stevia has no calories, but it is 200 times sweeter than sugar in the same concentration. Other studies suggest stevia might have extra health
"Available research is promising for the use of stevia in hypertension," said Catherine Ulbricht, senior pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and co-founder of Natural Standard Research Collaboration, which reviews evidence on herbs and supplements. Ulbricht said Natural Standard gave stevia a "grade B for efficacy" in lowering blood pressure. Other studies suggest stevia could benefit people with Type 2 diabetes, but Ulbricht says more research is needed.
A no-calorie source of sweetness is an obvious diet solution in theory. But a few studies show that replacing sugar with artificial or low-calorie sweeteners may not ultimately lead to weight loss in real life.
A 2004 study in rats found low-calorie sweeteners led the animals to overeat, possibly because of a mismatch between the perceived sweetness and the expected calories from sugar, according to the paper in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders.
The author of that study later argued that people who use artificial sweeteners may suffer health problems associated with excess sugar, including metabolic syndrome, which can be a precursor to diabetes.
"A number of studies suggest people who regularly consume ASB [artificially sweetened beverages] are at increased risk compared with those that do not consume ASB," Dr. Susan E. Swithers said in a 2013 opinion letter in the journal Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Yet there is also evidence that stevia does nothing to change eating habits or hurt metabolism in the short term. A 2010 study in the journal Appetite tested several artificial sweeteners against sugar and each other in 19 lean people and 12 obese people.
The study found people did not overeat after consuming a meal made with stevia instead of sugar. Their blood sugar was lower after a meal made with stevia than after eating a meal with sugar, and eating food with stevia resulted in lower insulin levels than eating either sucrose and aspartame.
Is stevia safe?
![]() |
| Can cause cramp too |
However, the FDA has allowed companies to use an isolated chemical from stevia as food additive, calling the chemical "generally recognized as safe." Now, products such as Truvia and others have the legal go-ahead to use Rebaudioside A, which is also found in stevia, in their no-calorie sweeteners. (now white, bleach and is a chemical- never use bTruvia )
But there are some health concerns surrounding the stevia plant. Stevia may cause low blood pressure, which would be of concern to some taking blood pressure medications
"Caution is advised when using medications that may also lower blood sugar. People taking insulin or drugs for diabetes by mouth should be monitored closely by a qualified health care professional
Stevia may also interact with anti-fungals, anti-inflammatories, anti-microbials, anti-cancer drugs, anti-virals, appetite suppressants, calcium channel blockers, cholesterol-lowering drugs, drugs that increase urination, fertility agents and other medications, Ulbricht said. People should talk with their doctor before deciding to take stevia in large amounts, she said.

Sick Chick Makes Sick Eggs
You can tell a sick chick by the egg color. Not all eggs are the same. The one supplied in grocery stores are full of antibiotic, chemicals and hormones and subject to diseases. (+bird flu) Raise your own back yard chickens or buy from a local grower. Health Food Store can be just as deceiving. (Egg recalls: see below the links that tells more of salmonella outbreak from "healthy chickens." It grows inside the egg not just on the shell. It can weaken the immune system and give you salmonella parasite permanently if not remove. They will continue to hatch out in the body. It's only one of the ways we get parasites (from raw or red blood in chicken's too.) Don't eat runny egg yolks ever. Make sure your eggs that have a hard shell rather than soft (farm egg or back yard raised chicken.) If you put your finger in the yolk most of the time the temperature is cold, of course it's not cooked. Never give preg. or nursing mothers, or children runny eggs. Farm eggs that roam are healthier eggs. The fact is eggs have always been nitrous for bacteria. They are not handled and put away on shelves fast enough.

It doesn't stop there: Watch the mayo and ice creams that do not cook the eggs. Insulin (shots) are grown in these eggs and vaccines for children, the elderly and sick.

Free-range" egg labels can't be trusted.
It can get complicated when choosing eggs. If you’ve seen the facts about cooped-up chickens producing eggs like a factory, you may be willing to pay a little extra to get eggs from healthier chickens since you can't raise or buy from a local farmer. But how do you really know how the chickens are treated?
Free-range and cage-free both sound good, but sadly, the company could be completely lying to you. It may mean that chickens get to roam free once a week but are still cooped up most of the time.
Do your research. The only way to be sure that the chickens are treated reasonably may be to buy eggs with the "certified humane" seal on the package – or to buy them from someone such as a neighbor you know and trust.
With all these lies circulating, we really are better off growing our own organic gardens, living off of our own whole fruits and vegetables, and paying extra attention to what we purchase.

Other countries do not wash eggs as it removes the protive barrier.
Salmonella enteritidis can infect a chicken's ovaries, contaminating a yolk before the shell firms up around it. Cooking usually kills the bacteria before they can harm you; still, eggs contaminated with salmonella are responsible for about 142,000 illnesses a year in the U.S., according to the Food and Drug Administration

Caffeine Raises Blood Sugar, pH and Brain Disorders.
http://player.mashpedia.com/player.php?q=IG4D0uqsAEs Check out the mushrooms for brain disorders here.
Caffeine Raises Blood Sugar
In one study or hypothesis of the effects of caffeine on diabetes, it was found that after a meal, those who had been given caffeine had a 21% increase in their glucose levels and their insulin levels rose 48%. (2004) (Coffee, tea or Coke, Pepsi?) Caffeine makes a fog in the brain and will throw off the normal pH balance, leaving us step table to pH diseases. (see bottom of page for more) Bi Polar, ADHD and etc should not go near coffee nor any other brain disorder. To have good health, no cancers i.e. a balanced pH is needed. Use hot lemon water in the morning instead.
This was in the Dr. James Lane, professor of psychiatry at Duke University, who led this study, said; “in a healthy person, glucose is metabolized within an hour or so after eating. Diabetics, however, do not metabolize glucose as efficiently. It appears that diabetics who consume caffeine are likely having a harder time regulating their insulin and glucose levels than those who don't take in caffeine.”
Avoiding caffeine might be another way to better manage their disease.
Remember to note that this person is a psychiatrist, no data on the study was noted here. For instance was the coffee black, sugar, cream or was the study done in decaf and the results. This was published by the http://http://www.teeccino.com//ArticleDetails.aspx?ArticleID=13 is a Tea Company (found on the Internet.) They sell decaf teas etc., was it bias? Is all caffeine the same for raising blood sugars?
I use a health food brand of Carbonated beverage called STEVIA, whatever flavor i.e. although it no chemicals and sugars it has caffeine, which I noticed it made me hungry...Careful if you have a weight problem (diabetes.)
Was is the chlorogenic found in coffee instead of it's caffeine as some suspect? More research needs to me needed.
Mushroom for brain disorders
DON'T use if any brain including mental disorders.
The main reason this issue is here is; one, its news to me and two, I am watching when I drink caffeine teas of coffee to see if it effect my blood sugars. Three, its wise for readers who are diabetic to do the same.
In this link are many other opposite findings of the study of caffeine effect on diabetes.
http://healthpsych.psy.vanderbilt.edu/CoffeeDiabetes.htm Do check blood sugars after using caffeine products (that day)...stop and another day don't use these products to see if there's a change. Obviously, research differs.

How to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally
What is the cause of insulin resistant's? It's because we're treating the symptom not the disease. On insulin's we need more and become insulin resistant's. Drugs suppress symptoms but does not cure anything.
One, The key to treatment is reducing not increasing the disease. https://youtu.be/mAwgdX5VxGc Two, Diabetes is a dietary disease. So the cure has to be dietary.

Bi Polar: How To Benefit Using Q96
I am not selling this product. It is good for diabetes also and, that's why I'm taking another brand as this is too expensive for me to use. Remember all disease is from the lacking of minerals and/or parasite. (Liken' the body, In a garden the bugs do not infest the good plants the weed out the sick that have less nutrient value)
I got a good brand from my local Health Food Store in my area. Experiment on the different multiple minerals brands from "organic plant" source until your feeling better. Then, maybe go to the net for a better buy.
I got one from a Internet source. I was in pill form but it was too small amounts + not balanced out using the other needed minerals.
Get a full metabolic test from your doctor or a send in hair annalist co. (you can get address and co. from HFS)

Insulin's Are Toxic chemicals and Loaded with Fungi's
The fact is: Insulin's are toxic chemicals with fungi's e coli and yeast as their extenders that is carries to the cells directly though the blood causing much damage.
I stared on mineral therapy and with new older insulin with no carrier called: Lispro protamine suspension in water and less acid instead of the other brand names all of which made my head-ears itch, loss of memory, tired and confused. This Lispro has the better pH.
The Metformin made my muscles so weak where I couldn't walk and is on the Lawyers sue list, heart and etc .
The new natural concepts to treat this condition is complex of mult-mineral therapy. ex: Q96 (too expensive?) and others from organic plant sources. It may take a while to find the one that will work for you. Remember these will build to what's depleted, then later, re-build. So it may take some time to notice real big differences. I've had to re-do my view, knowledge and mistakes or miss-concepts but its now it's working for me. Do a mineral metabolic panel to find out kind where your at and need to start. (A hair analysis will also work) (vitamin therapy only works because of the minerals in the food sources in the vitamin.)
Start with new concepts, the old ones got you here.
Vegans have the lowest incidence of type 2 diabetes. video explains why. :) See all the science papers of the video ► http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-may-plants-protect-against-diabetes/#sources
Doctor Michael Gerger created over 1000 amazing videos at http://nutritionfacts.org/videos about nutrition. With over 5000 articles on nutrition published each year, it's hard for the average person to read them all. :) Vegans (and sometimes vegetarians too) need B12 vitamin supplementation from a multivitamin or B12 fortified foods. :) Costs 2$ a year to get B12 vitamin.

Protective properties of whole plant foods against diabetes include antioxidants, lipotropes, fiber, and the ability to suppress the estrogen-producing bacteria in our gut.

INSULIN PATCHES REPLACES SHOTS
Insulin patches could replace injections for diabetics
by Reuters (Videos 2:02 mins)
A joint North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina project aims to replace insulin injections with an insulin patch. Nathan Frandino reports. Don't count on it. The big Pharm a's will loose too much money they've tied diabetics onto for life. Well it's not over till its over!
It's about time. Patch instead of shot may help with those who are insulin resistance because of their timers (chemical/germs) that spaces out the insulin. It won't have to damage the liver too. And, no drawing blood and needles. Kids will like it better. Pumps are not all that successful either. Metformin's hard on the heart etc. (I showed this to my physician she was not impressed?)
I've never trusted the medical propagandas' on diabetes, insulin's and their bazar treatments. (I'm a diabetic; all bad theories cause they don't really know how to cure it or, what causes it and their care has not worked) It's the drug corporations biggest money maker.
Note: Right now I'm using raw (not cooked) potato starch, in water, before meals. The first time I did this it didn't work, but I did it incorrectly. You can't ever heat it. My dau told me about this too. I let you know more later.

ALOE VERA FOR DIABETES
Here are some important facts that have been discovered from several researches on Aloe Vera:
Why To Rely On Aloe Vera For Diabetes?
Now, let us take a look at the reasons why aloe vera is considered as a natural treatment for diabetes and why we should rely on it:- Aloe Vera gel is rich in glucomannan. It is a dietary fiber (polysachharide), which gets dissolved in the water easily, thereby reducing the amounts of glucose in our body. In short, this hemicelluloses component can work as a hypoglycemic substance and lower our blood sugar level effectively.
- It contains certain compounds like anthraquinones (organic phenols with specific aroma) and lectins (proteins that bind carbohydrates together), which help in reducing the presence of glucose in our blood as well as maintaining it properly afterwards.
- It can lower blood sugar level as much as 50% in just a couple of months.
- It detoxifies the body, which helps in eliminating the excess glucose from the bloodstream.
- It has incredible antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties, which keep us protected from various other issues, such as ulcers, wounds, infections, etc. related to diabetes.
- It can boost the secretion of insulin in your body, thereby making the alleviation of diabetes easy.
- Being a natural ingredient, it causes no adverse side effect while treating diabetes.
- Many do not know Aloe Vera can remove x rays problems, nuke fall out, i.e. <--see ..="" li="" link="">Aloe vera can work wonder for diabetics in conjunction with a healthy and well-balanced diet. It is crucial that you go for fresh organic aloe gel or juice only instead of the processed ones. It will help you enjoy the maximum benefits. Suggestion: Initially, you may take only 1 teaspoon of aloe a day. Some may want to increase the amount up to 3 teaspoons daily as you become familiar with it. Liver: Blood Sugars/Diabetes
There is a lot of myths about blood sugar problems and why it cause and what to do about it from both sides of the fence.

What Happens to Your Body, When you
Drink Cola Beverages.
Don’t drink cola if you want to be healthy. Consuming soft drinks
is bad for so many reasons that science cannot even state all the
consequences nor do they know. But one thing we know for sure is that drinking Coke,
as a representative of soft drinks, wreaks havoc on the human
organism.
What happens? This writer Wade Meredith has shown the quick
progression of Coke’s assault which goes like this:
The main problem is sugar. It’s an evil that the
processed food industry and sugar growers don’t want people to know
about. Even dietitians, financially supported by sugar growers and
sugary product manufacturers, are loathe to tell us the truth.
– In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
– 20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an
insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it
can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this
particular moment)
– 40 minutes: Caffeine
absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure
rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your
bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked
preventing drowsiness.
– 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
– 45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
– In just
over 60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and
zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in
metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial
sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
– In just over 60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties
come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that
you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was
headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
– In just over 60 minutes: As the rave inside of
you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become
irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away
all the water that was in the Coke.
But not before infusing it with
valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even
having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and
teeth.

STARCHES FOR THE DIABETIC
STARCHES ARE BETTER FOR THE DIABETIC'S (So new research is showing)
It sounding more correct to me as I noticed on a vegan diet my insulin's numbers came down and the starch and potatoes were OK. But, because of the pressure of our so called experts I was unable to write about it yet even though I did lose 50 pound and ate a lot? I now eat more vegetarian, but cut back on sugar/dairy and no sodas.
The resistance, in this case, comes in the form of so-called resistant starches, certain kinds of carbohydrates that resist digestion in the small intestine and enter into the large intestine, or colon, mostly in the same form they entered your mouth.
These starches — found in seed hulls, parts of corn and beans, and in room-temperature rice and pasta — can ferment in the colon to promote the growth of "good" bacteria and have many other beneficial effects.
Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver summarize these benefits in a review paper in the current issue of the journal Current Opinion in Gastroenterology. The review includes the researchers' own findings concerning resistant starch and weight control. [The Scoop on 7 Perfect Survival Foods]
Starch vs. fiber
The word "starch" often is confused with fiber. Both are complex carbohydrates, and both are important for good health. But starch, for the most part, is highly digestible; and fiber is not. Starches are found in root vegetables, tubers, winter squashes, grains and legumes. Your body starts digesting these starches from the moment you start chewing, extracting nutrients and energy.
Fiber is more like the natural packaging for fruits and vegetables, such as the skin or the rigid cellular walls of plants. The human body does not absorb nutrients or energy from them. Soluble fiber dissolves in water, making food more viscous, slowing digestion, and prolonging the feeling of fullness. Insoluble fiber absorbs water and promotes regular and firm bowel movements.
Resistant starch has properties of both soluble and insoluble fiber, said Janine Higgins, lead author on the review paper and associate professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. There are five different forms of resistant starch, she said, and each kind reaches the colon largely unscathed to do its handiwork.
Cures what ails you
Resistant starch might sound like some kind of miracle cure-all, but independent studies have found this substance, more so than ordinary dietary fiber, can help: kill precancerous polyps in the colon; prevent diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity and regulating blood sugar; maintain healthy body weight; reduce inflammation; prevent or treat inflammatory bowel disease; and help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.
In 2010, scientists at Virginia Polytechnic and State University reported that resistant starch might also protect against breast cancer.
So, how can a bit of indigestible starch do all this?
ARE STARCHES FRIEND OR FOE?
"Resistant starch is a very good substrate for fermentation," Higgins told Live Science. "Instead of being digested by amylases in the upper digestive tract, it passes to the bowel, where it is fermented by bacteria into short chain fatty acids (SCFA). SCFA are acidic, so they lower bowel pH, which facilitates proliferation of good bugs and inhibits growth of pathogenic bacteria. All of this extra fermentation and availability of SCFA provides fuel or energy for the colonocytes [cells lining the colon], which are a barrier against infection."
"Therefore, the lining of the bowel thickens and becomes healthier, and more good bugs colonize and thrive," Higgins added. "In this way, resistant starch acts as a probiotic. Resistant starch also has some of the properties of insoluble fiber, so it increases stool bulk and decreases transit time, both of which are indicators of bowel health."
Also, butyrate, a type of SCFA, seems to be involved in the prevention of bowel cancer, Higgins said. (Surgery's: If some of the bowl/stomach is removed this would be beneficial to slow the digestive process down.)
Most plant based, high-fiber, vegetable-based diets will be rich in resistant starches, but some extra care is needed to get them into your diet. For example, pasta and rice have resistant starch, but only at room temperature. So, pasta salad and sushi are better sources of resistant starch. Whole grains, peas, and beans have a form of resistant starch that maintains its structure even when hot.
Green banana flour is another source of resistant starch, and it is gluten free.
Not just resistant-starch... but starch in general. Walter Kempner cured type-2 diabetics long ago with his infamous rice-diet, which consisted of white-rice and fruit.

GUIDE TO STARCH RESISTANT FOODS
Before I go any further, though, a series of hat tips to Richard Nikoley, Tatertot Tim, and Dr. BG, whose early and ongoing research into the benefits, real-world implications, and clinical applications of resistant starch have proved to be a real asset for the ancestral health community. Oh, and I even hear tell that they’re writing a book on the subject. Interesting…
The Definitive Guide to Resistant Starch
A few years back, I briefly covered a throwaway Yahoo! article about how “carbs will make you lose weight” because so many readers had emailed about it. It turned out that the “carbs” in the article were resistant starch, a type of carbohydrate that our digestive enzymes cannot break down. I’ll admit now, with regret, that I didn’t look as deeply into the matter as I might have. I didn’t dismiss resistant starch, but I did downplay its importance, characterizing it as “just another type of prebiotic” – important but not necessary so long as you were eating other fermentable fibers. While technically true, we’re fast learning that resistant starch may be a special type of prebiotic with a special place in the human diet.In subsequent Dear Mark articles, I’ve since given resistant starch a closer, more substantial look, and today I’m going to give it the definitive guide treatment.
What Is Resistant Starch?
When you think about “starch,” what comes to mind?
Glucose. Carbs. Elevated blood sugar. Insulin spikes. Glycogen repletion. Basically, we think about starch that we (meaning our host cells) can digest, absorb, and metabolize as glucose (for better or worse).
Officially, resistant starch is “the sum of starch and products of starch degradation not absorbed in the small intestine of healthy individuals.” Instead of being cleaved in twain by our enzymes and absorbed as glucose, resistant starch (RS) travels unscathed through the small intestine into the colon, where colonic gut flora metabolize it into short chain fatty acids. Thus, it’s resistant to digestion by the host.
There are four types of resistant starch:
RS Type 1 – Starch bound by indigestible plant cell walls; found in beans, grains, and seeds.RS Type 2 – Starch that is intrinsically indigestible in the raw state due to its high amylose content; found in potatoes, bananas, plantains, type 2 RS becomes accessible upon heating.
RS Type 3 – Retrograded starch; when some starches have been cooked, cooling them (fridge or freezer) changes the structure and makes it more resistant to digestion; found in cooked and cooled potatoes, grains, and beans.
RS Type 4 – Industrial resistant starch; type 4 RS doesn’t occur naturally and has been chemically modified; commonly found in “hi-maize resistant starch.”
It’s almost certain that different RS types have somewhat different effects on our gut flora, but the specifics have yet to be fully elucidated. In general, RS (of any type) acts fairly similarly across the various types.
Where Do We Get It?
We can get RS from food. The richest food sources are raw potatoes, green bananas, plantains, cooked-and-cooled potatoes, cooked-and-cooled-rice, parboiled rice, and cooked-and-cooled legumes.
We can get RS from supplementary isolated starch sources. The best sources are raw potato starch, plantain flour, green banana flour, and cassava/tapioca starch. Raw (not sprouted) mung beans are a good source of RS, so mung bean starch (commonly available in Asian grocers) will probably work, too.
The most reliable way to get lots of RS, fast, is with raw potato starch. There are about 8 grams of RS in a tablespoon of the most popular brand: Bob’s Red Mill Unmodified Potato Starch. It’s also available at Whole Foods.
For an exhaustive compendium of RS sources, check out this PDF from Free the Animal.
What Does It Do for Us?
Like any other organism, gut bacteria require sustenance. They need to eat, and certain food sources are better than others. In essence, RS is top-shelf food for your gut bugs. That’s the basic – and most important – function of RS.
What Are the Health Benefits of Consuming RS?
What does the research say?
Preferentially feeds “good” bacteria responsible for butyrate production. It even promotes greater butyrate production than other prebiotics. Since the resident gut flora produce the butyrate, and everyone has different levels of the different flora, the degree of butyrate production varies according to the individual, but resistant starch consistently results in lots of butyrate across nearly every subject who consumes it. Butyrate is crucial because it’s the prime energy source of our colonic cells (almost as if they’re designed for steady exposure to butyrate!), and it may be responsible for most of the other RS-related benefits.Improves insulin sensitivity. Sure enough, it improves insulin sensitivity, even in people with metabolic syndrome.
Improves the integrity and function of the gut. Resistant starch basically increases colonic hypertrophy, making it more robust and improving its functionality. It also inhibits endotoxin from getting into circulation and reduces leaky gut, which could have positive ramifications on allergies and autoimmune conditions.
Lowers the blood glucose response to food. One reason some people avoid even minimal amounts of carbohydrate is the blood glucose response; theirs is too high. Resistant starch lowers the postprandial blood glucose spike. This reduction may also extend to subsequent meals.
Reduces fasting blood sugar. This is one of the most commonly mentioned benefits of RS, and the research seems to back it up.
Increases satiety. In a recent human study, a large dose of resistant starch increased satiety and decreased subsequent food intake.
May preferentially bind to and expel “bad” bacteria. This is only preliminary, but there’s evidence that resistant starch may actually treat small intestinal bacterial overgrowth by “flushing” the pathogenic bacteria out in the feces. It’s also been found to be an effective treatment for cholera when added to the rehydration formula given to patients; the cholera bacteria attach themselves to the RS granules almost immediately for expulsion.
Enhances magnesium absorption. Probably because it improves gut function and integrity, resistant starch increases dietary magnesium absorption.
What do user anecdotes say?
Improves body composition. I’ve heard reports of lowered body fat and increased lean mass after supplementing with or increasing dietary intake of RS. Seeing as how RS consumption promotes increased fat oxidation after meals, this appears to be possible or even likely.Improves thyroid function. Many RS supplementers have noted increases in body temperature, a rough indicator of thyroid function.
Improves sleep, conferring the ability to hold and direct (in real time) private viewings of vivid movie-esque dreams throughout the night. I’ve noticed this too and suspect it has something to do with increased GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) from the increased butyrate. Another possibility is that resistant starch is feeding serotonin-producing gut bacteria, and the serotonin is being converted to melatonin when darkness falls.
Increases mental calm. Many people report feeling very “zen” after increasing RS intake, with reductions in anxiety and perceived stress. The latest science indicates that our gut flora can impact our brain, and specific probiotics are being explored as anti-anxiety agents, so these reports may very well have some merit.
Are There Any Downsides?
For all the success stories, the message boards are also rife with negative reactions to RS. They take it, maybe too much to start, and get gas, bloating, cramping, diarrhea or constipation, a sense of “blockage,” headaches, and even heartburn. I think RS supplementation may be a good measuring stick for the health of your gut. Folks with good gut function tend to respond positively, while people with compromised guts respond poorly. The gas, bloating, cramps and everything else are indicators that your gut needs work. But it’s not the “fault” of resistant starch, per se.
What to do if you’re one of the unlucky ones? You’ve got a few options:
You could skip it altogether. I think this is unwise, personally, because the role of fermentable fibers, including RS, in the evolution of the human gut biome/immune system has been monumental and frankly irreplaceable. There’s a lot of potential there and we’d be remiss to ignore it.You could incorporate probiotics. You need the guys that eat the RS to get the benefits of consuming RS. And sure, you have gut flora – we all do, for the most part, except after colonic sterilization before a colonoscopy or a massive round of antibiotics, maybe – but you don’t have the right kinds. Probiotics, especially the soil-based ones (the kind we’d be exposed to if we worked outside, got our hands dirty, and generally lived a human existence closer to that of our ancient ancestors), really seem to mesh well with resistant starch.
You should reduce the dose. Some people can jump in with a full 20-30 grams of RS and have no issues. Others need to ramp things up more gradually. Start with a teaspoon of your refined RS source, or even half a teaspoon, and get acclimated to that before you increase the dose.
You could eat your RS in food form. Potato starch and other supplementary forms of RS are great because they’re easy and reliable, but it’s also a fairly novel way to consume RS. You might be better off eating half a green banana instead of a tablespoon of potato starch.
My Experience
The first time I tried potato starch, I got a lot of gas. Not the end of the world, and I realize gas is a natural product of fermentation, just unpleasant. It died down after a few days, but it was only after I added in some of my Primal Flora probiotic that I started seeing the oft-cited benefits: better sleep, vivid dreams, a more “even keel.”
Now, I do potato starch intermittently. I’m very suspicious of eating anything on a daily basis. I tend to cycle foods, supplements, exercises, everything. Gas production goes up every time I re-start the potato starch, but not unpleasantly so and it subsides relatively quickly, especially when I take the probiotics.
So there’s a learning curve to RS. It’s not a cure all, but neither is anything else. It’s merely an important, arguably necessary piece of a very large, very complex puzzle.
Resistant starch is vitally important for gut (and thus overall) health, but it’s not the only thing we need. It’s likely that other forms of fermentable fiber (prebiotics) act synergistically with RS.
Hey, it’s almost like eating actual food with its broad and varied range of bioactive compounds, polyphenols, fibers, resistant starches, vitamins, and minerals tends to have the best effects on our gut biome! You can certainly enhance the picture with isolated refined resistant starches and fibers like unmodified potato starch, but they can’t replace what our bodies really expect: the food.
Let me know what you think, and I hope you find this guide useful.
What’s your experience been with resistant starch? Good, bad, neutral? Let’s hear all about it!
