Older Home Remedies

Some Older Home Remedies are always nice to have on hand as many will have to rely on the herbs that can be found growing wild in your area during harder times. Take “herb walks” and form them teaching the medicinal components of the herbs. Here is some mixed with honey and/or molasses that always used as a medicine along with soothing teas made from the wild herbs from our grandma’s. Honey Cough Syrup
1-cup honey
2 lemons (juiced)
½ cup hot water
1 Tbs. Glycerine (or vinegar)
Mix ingredients together thoroughly. Dosage might be 1 tbs. when a cough persists.
The glycerine is used as a preservative. www.mountainroseherbs.com has vegetable glycerine available. The company comes from Oregon and I like products from Oregon it’s a great state for “Organic”. I do not have any affiliation to this company or any other recommended companies in my pages. I do not sell products. Check Internet under glycerine for better prices i.e. this company does have a catalogue.
I've substitued raw unprocessed apple cider vinegar for glycerine when not on hand or is too pricey in my area.
What nice about making your own cough syrups is you can add onion, thyme, i.e. to the same recipe. Onion make natural sulfa instead of going to the doctor for those drugs that so many are allergic to. The thyme cough syrup is in my pages already.
The healthier the plant the more properties of healing.
Cough Remedy
2-3 garlic buds (crushed)
2-4 tbs. honey
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
Dosage might be 1 tsp. for cough
Mustard Plaster
It was used for chest colds. I know the arts lost but here it is anyways.
4 tbs. flour
2 tsp. oil
1 tbs. dry mustard
Mix in lukewarm water to form a paste. Spread on thin clean cloth and cover. Place on chest for 20 minutes, shorter time for children. Be careful not to burn the skin. Some Vaseline might aid this from happening but try not to make a barrier unless necessary.
Remove the plaster and cover the chest with camphorated or Vicks. Then cover with warm fabric such as flannel or towel. Repeat in 4 hours etc.
Muscle Rub
l pint rubbing alcohol
2 tbs. oil of wintergreen
Shake bottle before each use.
Ear Ache
Heat onion, cut in half and warm to the touch will work as a great poultice, especially for an earache.
Garlic oil, mullein oil, and Lobelia tincture mixed in equal parts is also a very effective ear drops.
Mosquito Bites
½ cup alcohol
2 aspirins
Shake until it dissolved. Apply to the bite and let dry
Frost Bite
1 cup vinegar
½ cup salt
Ice water
Mix and apply to affected area. For sprains or strained muscles, use as a compress.
Herbal Liniment
Use 1 qt. Vinegar, rubbing alcohol (70%) or vodka (90 %). To this add 1 ounce powdered golden seal root and 1-ounce slippery elm bark (optional). Shake well and let stand for 14 days. Shake several times each day. For sprains, sore muscles, pulled muscles, etc., soak a soft cloth with the liniment. Put over the affected area. Cover this with a plastic wrap and keep all in place with an elastic bandage. For tender skin (such as a child’s) or in other sensitive areas, the vinegar liniment may burn, so rub the area with Vaseline or similar salves before applying liniment. Liniment can and should be left on for 24 hours. This can be changed and put back on. Comfrey Root can also be added to this formula if you have access to it.
Herbal Salve
Mix equal parts powdered Comfrey Root, Golden seal root, and Slippery elm bark with wheat germ oil, honey and mineral water. (Cocoa nut butter or Shea Butter instead of the oil if you have it)
Burn Salve
1 bar of melted cocoa butter
2 Tbs. golden seal powder
2 Tbs. myrrh gum powder
Sunburn
Aloe Vera
Mullein
Have an aloe Vera plant in your home. Take a leaf and squeeze the liquid onto the burn or wound. It is a plant for radiation burns, and even when taking x-rays.
Itching or Hives
1-cup baking soda in bath
Add 2-3 Tbs. ginger powders
Or oatmeal
Or some Clorox
Bee or Wasp Stings
Tincture of cayenne and Lobelia to the area
Cuts, Scratches and Infections
Wash cut with soap and water, rinse with hydrogen peroxide
Make a dressing for any infection with Epsom salts in 1 cup boiled water soaked in the solution. Place this one the infected area and wrap with a clean cloth.
Poultice for Cuts and Bleeding
Comfrey Root is the best (It's easy to grow with a root start)
Soak the chopped leaves in boiling water and put on cut (cooled enough to handle). Then reapply with different leaves. Keep clean cloth wrapped about the wound.
Mix ½ tsp. cayenne with warm water and sip slowly. This will stop the bleeding.
